Wheel Spacers for Teardrop Towing.

Tow behind a narrow-fendered rig and it doesn't take long to notice the tire creeping toward the side wall — every pothole and washboard road walks it closer, and eventually it's rubbing paint. A set of hub-centric wheel spacers pushes the wheel back out where it belongs, and picks up a wider, more stable stance for towing while it's at it.

Why We Run Them

A teardrop's side wall sits closer to the wheel than most trailers you've towed before — there's no fender well cut deep into a truck bed to hide behind, just a flat wall a few inches off the tire. Stock wheel offset on a lot of tow vehicles and utility trailer axles leaves barely enough clearance, and it shrinks further once a heavier tire or a slight lean under load enters the picture. Push the wheel out an inch or two with a spacer and that clearance comes back, plus you pick up a wider track width, which matters more than people expect when a loaded teardrop is pushing and pulling on the tow vehicle through a crosswind or a hard corner. A wider stance lowers the roll couple and gives the suspension more leverage against sway — it's the same reason wide-track race cars corner flatter than narrow ones.

What to Look For

Hub-Centric Fit

The spacer's center bore should match your hub diameter exactly, so the hub — not the lug studs — carries the wheel's weight. A lug-centric spacer relies on the studs alone to keep the wheel located, which invites vibration and uneven wear over thousands of towing miles.

Forged 6061-T6 or 7075-T6

Look for spacers forged (not cast) from 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 billet aluminum. Forging aligns the metal's grain structure for real strength under repeated load; cast spacers are cheaper but more prone to cracking around the stud holes over time.

Matching Bolt Pattern

The spacer's bolt pattern has to match both your hub and your wheel exactly — a 5x4.5" hub needs a 5x4.5" spacer and a 5x4.5" wheel on the other side. Double-check the pattern and thread pitch against your specific axle before ordering.

Grade 10.9 Studs or Better

The included studs (or your reused factory studs, on a bolt-on spacer) should be rated Grade 10.9 or higher. These carry the entire clamping load between hub and wheel — this isn't a place to save money on hardware.

Correct Torque Spec

Torque the lug nuts to the spacer manufacturer's spec (commonly 90–100 ft-lbs for 1/2"-20 studs, but always confirm against the product's instructions) using a calibrated torque wrench and a star pattern, not a guess with an impact gun.

Re-Torque After Driving

New hardware seats itself. Re-check every lug nut's torque after the first 25–50 miles of driving, and again after your first real tow — a spacer that backs off unnoticed is how wheels come loose on the highway.

Picking the Right Size

Wheel spacers commonly come in 1", 1.5", and 2" thicknesses, and the right one depends on how close your tires actually sit to the side wall. Start by measuring the gap at ride height, loaded — that's the number that matters once you're rolling, not the number sitting empty in the driveway. A 1" spacer is often enough to clear a wall that's just barely getting kissed; a 1.5" or 2" spacer is for a tighter setup or when you're intentionally chasing a wider stance for towing stability.

Don't just default to the biggest spacer on the shelf, though. Push the wheel too far out and it can clear the fender's coverage entirely — once the tire's contact patch sits outside the fender line, there's nothing stopping it from flinging rocks, mud, and road spray straight onto the teardrop's side wall, or onto whatever's behind you on the highway. Measure the fender's actual coverage width before you buy, and size the spacer to stay inside it.
