Water vs Oil-Based Polyurethane.
Every piece of plywood that goes into a build eventually needs a coat of something to protect it — inside the cabin it's humidity and spilled coffee, outside it's rain, road grime, and UV. Polyurethane is our go-to for both jobs, but not the same can of it. Which one we reach for comes down to where the panel lives and how much water it's going to see.
Why Seal It at All
Bare plywood soaks up moisture, stains, and grime the moment it goes into service — and a teardrop cabin is a small, hard-working box that sees all three. A cured film of polyurethane seals the grain so water beads up and wipes off instead of soaking in, and it gives the surface enough abrasion resistance to survive years of gear getting loaded and unloaded across it. The panels below are all headed for finish before they go into the build — cabinet fronts, galley panels, and a side wall interior, cut and laid out on the bench waiting on a coat.
Water-Based Poly for Interior Surfaces
For anything inside the cabin that isn't going to see standing water — cabinet faces, ceiling panels, shelving, trim — water-based poly is the easy choice. It's thin, it's fast, and it stays honest to the wood underneath.
Quick Dry Time
Dry to the touch in under an hour and recoatable in two to four — a panel can go from raw wood to a finished coat before lunch.
Multiple Coats a Day
Because it dries so fast, three coats in a single afternoon is realistic instead of a multi-day wait between passes.
No Yellowing
Stays clear over time instead of ambering, which matters on light woods and white-washed panels where color shift would actually show.
Best for Non-Wet Areas
Softer and less water-resistant than oil-based, so it belongs on surfaces that see humidity and the occasional wipe-down, not standing liquid.
Easy Cleanup
Brushes and applicators rinse out with soap and water — no mineral spirits or solvent disposal to deal with mid-project.
Low Odor
Low VOC and mild smell make it the better pick for finishing panels inside an enclosed shop or garage.
On the Bench
Oil-Based Poly for Wet Areas
Anywhere a panel is going to see actual water on a regular basis — the galley countertop, the sink surround, an exterior side-mounted table that sits out in the weather — we switch to oil-based. It builds a harder, thicker film that shrugs off standing moisture and daily abuse far better than water-based poly does, which is worth the tradeoff of a longer cure and a slight amber tint that deepens with age. That tint is actually a feature on darker-stained galley tops and exterior tables, even if it's not what you want on a light interior panel.
Applying Water-Based vs Oil-Based
Making Your Own Wipe-On Poly
Straight oil-based poly is thick enough that brushing it into a tight galley corner or around a sink cutout invites drips and brush marks. Cutting it down and wiping it on instead solves both problems. Mix it roughly 50/50 with mineral spirits and pour it into a squeeze bottle — that gives you a thinned finish you can dose out a little at a time onto a lint-free rag instead of fighting a brush in a tight space.
Wipe it on in the direction of the grain with light, even pressure, let it flash off, and wipe away any pooling before it sets — a thin wiped coat dries faster than a brushed one and lays down with essentially no visible brush marks. Because each coat goes on so thin, it usually takes more passes than brushing to build the same film thickness, but on curved edges, cutouts, and corners where a brush struggles, wipe-on is worth the extra coats.
